GEAR UP TUTOR              

 

 

Positions available: Dependent upon Employee Availability, Maximum of 16 at each school site

 

Starting Salary: $8.50

 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Each tutor will work as part of a team responsible of tutoring high school students who are part of the GEAR UP program at Eagle Rock, Franklin and Lincoln High School.  In addition to working directly with high school students (providing academic tutoring, and mentoring), tutors are expected to assist high school seniors with the College and Financial Aid application process. Tutors will be supervised by the Director of the Neighborhood Partnership Program and will collaborate directly with the staff at one of the partner high schools.

Time Commitment:                                                                                                                             Tutors must commit to work at least one semester and are encouraged to stay longer if possible. Consistent, ongoing support is necessary for the students and teachers with whom we work. All tutors are expected to honor the term of their commitment.

 

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Provide general assistance to classroom teachers by working with students who need extra help.

  • Self-starter, able to work independently and be proactive

  • Flexible, able to work under pressure

  • Maturity, respect for youth, ability to listen with patience and an open mind

  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject matter

  • Enjoy tutoring the subject for which services are being provided

  • Be able to explain concepts to others effectively

  • Ability to work one-on-one and with large groups

  • Maintain a punctual and reliable work schedule

  • Follow program procedures and complete all necessary paperwork

 

Preferred capabilities:

  • Experience providing direct service to High School -aged students

  • Sensitivity to the needs of at-risk students (hyperactivity, ADHD, etc.)

  • Understanding of College Admission and Financial Aid process

  • Bilingual Spanish skills

  • Valid driver’s license and current Occidental College Designated Driver Status

 

Number of hours a week: 6 mm/10 max

Training: 5-7 hours TBA

Monday/Wednesday:

Morning Shift: 8:00a.m.-12:30p.m.  (1 positions open, Designated Drivers needed)

 

 

Lincoln High School


Monday/Wednesday:

Morning Shift: 8:00a.m.-12:10p.m.  (1 positions open, Designated Drivers needed)
