Occidental College is a partner in the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs Project Higher Learning Grant. The goal of GEAR UP Project Higher Learning is to prepare students to succeed academically in middle and high school in order to gain admittance to and successfully complete a program of postsecondary education. Occidental serves as one of the lead partners in this grant administered by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Project Higher Learning runs programs at Marshall, Lincoln, Franklin, and Eagle Rock High School, providing mentoring and tutoring services for approximately 4,000 students.

 

The Eagle Rock Title One Tutoring Program gives Oxy students the opportunity to assist teachers at Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School by working in the classroom during regular school hours. The program provides services for approximately 600 students through in-class tutoring and mentoring.

 

 

Mustangs on the Move is a program that provides enrichment activities to students at John Muir High School. Oxy students participate as mentors/ tutors in an after school homework assistance program. This program not only serves as a basis for academic success, but also provides a safe space for students to congregate after school.
